Loos with a view!

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

Next month The Shard in London finally opens, all 1,016ft of it. One of the most talked about features of the building are the phenomenal toilets on the top floor, offering quite possibly the best views in the capital. But The Shard is by no means leading the pack when it comes to loos with a view; we’ve tracked down five of the top places around the world to spend a penny and get a great view for free as you pee! :)

toilet roll

–          Felix Bar, the Peninsula Hotel, Hong Kong: the urinals were originally floor to ceiling glass, however proper urinals have now been installed – floor to ceiling glass remains in place allowing breath-taking views overlooking Kowloon (for men only!);

–          Mumin Papa Cafe, Japan: the toilets at this cafe are built into an aquarium soyou can feast your eyes on turtles and rainbow fish as you do your business;

–          Mix Bar, Las Vegas: these extremely luxurious toilets are located on the 64th floor of The Hotel at Mandalay Bay and provide a panoramic view of across the hustle and bustle of the Strip;

–          Changi Airport, Singapore: calling all plane spotters! You won’t miss a thing when paying a call at the toilets in Changi Airport. The urinals in Terminal 3 look out over the runway allowing up close views of the planes taking off and landing;

–          Shanghai Financial Center, China: Step away from the edge…not only are these loos some of the highest in the world, they are also phenomenally high tech and offer dramatic views over the Bund below. Worth a visit for the toilets alone.

Are we missing any? Send us your recommended loos with a view and we can add to the list!

Calling all Skiers and Snowboarders!

Friday, January 11th, 2013

Skiing has been a prominent topic for discussion today in the WAYN office: whether people are going and where they’re planning to go. The recurring reason why many colleagues have decided forego a trip this is year is down to cost so I have put together a handy list of places you may not have immediately considered but where you can ski on a budget.

Bulgaria: Bansko is the biggest and reportedly the best resort with a modern lift system. The snow reliability here is also better than other resorts, and they have good snowmaking facilities.
Spain: for high altitude skiing for every level of expertise the Sierra Nevada is a good bet. It is one of the highest ski resorts in the Europe, boats an excellent snow record and numerous clear sunny days. For a cheaper option check out nearby Pinos Genil or accommodation in Granada.

Macedonia: still relatively unknown as a place to ski, Macedonia can’t be beaten for those on a budget who want to escape the crowds. Popova Shapka is one of the largest resorts in Macedonia and is only 35kms from the capital Skopje so is perfect for a weekend jaunt. For the more advanced skiier, Zare Lazarevski is recommended, it has a giant slalom piste and a number of challenging black runs.

Poland: the most popular resort is the stunningly picturesque Zakopane. It’s great for beginners but intermediates are likely to get bored after a few days. Eating out is seriously good value, as is the beer.

For those unable to travel abroad this year don’t forget that there are some good options in the UK to practice those parallel turns including:

– Glencoe, Scotland
– The Nevis range
– Chill Factor, Manchester
– SnowDome, Tamworth
– SNO!zone Milton Keynes

WAYNERs, Let us know if we’ve missed any good value resorts or places to ski in the UK – we want to hear from you!

Finally, don’t forget to check out the WAYN skiing/snowboarding activities page for more top tips…
